I keep seeing posts that people assume that we blindly voted for Biden solely because we don’t like Trump. While I didn’t solely vote for Biden because of this, anti-hate played a huge role in it. My decision of who to vote for was not to follow a “trend” or just to vote “anti-Trump.” These are some of the things that I voted for:
•Basic human rights: LGBTQ+ rights, women's rights, black lives and systemic racism, DACA recipients, immigrants, healthcare, etc. Social justice is the best cure for rioting. When there are millions of people around the world asking for change, it shouldn’t be ignored.
•Climate: there is an existential threat facing humanity and people are still choosing to ignore it and choosing profit over the planet. When it’s something that threatens our existence, I’m not sure how it ever became political.
•Science & COVID: Science is not partisan. we should TRUST scientific facts. We are in the middle of a pandemic and our current president acts like nothing is happening and he completely disregards the 225,000+ lives that were lost and also the surge that’s happening. If we have to do another lockdown to save lives, let’s do it with dignity and respect. If wearing a mask is could help save lives, be decent and wear one. It’s a health crisis not a political one.
•Democracy: Trump has set this election up so that his supporters believe that their is voter fraud happening. In reality it’s a legitimate process and research has proved that it is very rare. He is threatening our democratic rights and is refusing to accept that the American people have voiced that we want change.
•Decency and kindness
•Moral and ethical responsibility
•Unity and leadership
For me, this election wasn’t about just myself or one party or one candidate. It was about the lives of others and making sure that we have a future we can be proud of for everyone that lives here. I appreciate everyone having different political views, but I don’t think the things that I listed should be political views. These are things that go much deeper than politics and they are things that should matter to all of us. Diversity and inclusion of each and every individual is what makes our country great. Everyone deserves to have equal rights and to be treated with dignity and respect. Our country is more divided than ever and this is our opportunity to make a better future for ALL Americans. It seems like we have lost empathy and respect for one another. You don’t have to like Joe Biden. Everyone knows that he is not perfect, but for the sake of our country have some respect and faith in him. Have faith that Biden will do great things because despising him doesn’t help anything. We can do better than this. Try to see a different perspective and understand that our country is in deep need of healing and we all need to come together. We can’t move forward being so divided on everything. We are stronger united than we are divided. Kindness and decency matters.
